Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Jan Crouch has been accused of covering up her granddaughter’s rape. Crouch passed away last year.
According to Christianity Today, an Orange County, California Superior Court found that Crouch was liable for 45 percent of the trauma experienced by her granddaughter. Carra Crouch has been awarded $2 million in the case.
The rape allegedly happened when Carra Crouch was only 13. She had accompanied her grandmother to a Praise-A-Thon fundraiser event. While in her hotel room, Carra Crouch, who is now 24, was reportedly assaulted by a 30-year-old TBN employee.
When Carra told her grandmother what happened, Jan Crouch reportedly dismissed it and instead berated Carra for allowing the man into her room.
“Why would you have that man in your room? Why would you let this happen?” Jan Crouch allegedly told her granddaughter, according to the lawsuit.
“The jury ultimately determined that Jan’s response—by blaming and castigating Carra, by saying words beyond all realm of decency—constituted outrageous conduct,” said David Keesling, Carra Crouch’s attorney.
TBN’s lawyer, however, defended Jan Crouch, stating, “It’s a shame Jan Crouch is not here to defend herself,” said attorney Michael King. “Her position was, if she knew something, she would have acted.”
Crouch founded Trinity Broadcasting Network along with her husband in 1973. It went on to become the largest religious network in the world.
