Texas Lawmaker Proposes Bill That Would Make Abortion Illegal in the State

A Texas lawmaker has proposed a bill that would ban all abortions in the state except for cases in which the life of the mother is in danger.

The bill comes in the wake of a number of other recent pro-life measures; perhaps most notably the recent 20-week ban on abortion signed into law in Ohio in December and a similar bill adopted in Kentucky just this past week.

The Texas bill, introduced by Representative Tony Tinderholt (R-Arlington) would go even further.

“A living human child, from the moment of fertilization upon the fusion of a human spermatozoon with a human ovum is entitled to the same rights, powers, and privileges as are secured or granted by the laws of this state to any other human child,” part of the bill reads, according to ChristianNews.net.

“When you read and see how abortions are performed, and how they end the life of an innocent child, it amazes me that we allow that,” Tinderholdt told the Star-Telegram. “When we look back over history and we see … the cultures that took the lives of children, people are appalled by that. People are going to do that with America, too, and look back one day and say they can’t believe we allowed this.”

Abortion activist groups have pushed back against the proposed law, claiming that it is unfair and even “cruel” to women. Pro-life activists, however, say that the bill is necessary to protect these innocent lives.

“It’s a child. It’s a human being. God creates these children in his image. How could anyone want to destroy that?” asked Tinderholdt.

Nearly 60 million babies have been aborted in the U.S. since Roe v. Wade made abortion legal in 1973. In Texas in 2013 alone, 63,168 abortions were performed.
