President-elect Donald Trump has nominated retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson for the position of secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Trump's incoming administration.

Although, as ChristianHeadlines.com previously reported, Carson initially said he could “best serve the President outside the administration," he has apparently had a change of mind, according to The Blaze.

Trump’s team confirmed Carson’s nomination early Monday morning.

“Ben Carson has a brilliant mind and is passionate about strengthening communities and families within those communities,” Trump said in a statement. “We have talked at length about my urban renewal agenda and our message of economic revival, very much including inner cities.”

“He is a tough competitor and never gives up,” he added.

Trump and Carson were rivals in the 2016 presidential election primaries, but after Trump won the Republican nomination, Carson voiced his support for the billionaire businessman.

Carson said in a statement that he was honored to accept the position and to serve in Trump's administration in this capacity.

“I am honored to accept the opportunity to serve our country in the Trump administration. I feel that I can make a significant contribution particularly by strengthening communities that are most in need. We have much work to do in enhancing every aspect of our nation and ensuring that our nation’s housing needs are met.”
