In his first address to Congress, President Trump said Tuesday that a “new chapter of American greatness is now beginning.”

He said his administration would “restart the engine of the American economy” by cutting taxes, pushing through trade deals and investing $1 trillion in infrastructure.

“Everything that is broken in our country can be fixed. Every problem can be solved. And every hurting family can find healing, and hope,” Trump said.

“A new chapter of American greatness is now beginning. A new national pride is sweeping across our nation,” he said. “And a new surge of optimism is placing impossible dreams firmly within our grasp.”

Trump said his administration is working on a “historic tax reform” that will help companies compete “anywhere and with anyone.”

He also said he planned to replace ObamaCare with reforms that will “expand choice, increase access, lower costs, and at the same time, provide better health care.”

However, Democrats say he didn’t detail how he would do any of those things.

"His speeches and the realities are very, very far apart," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, said on CNN afterward. "Until his reality catches up with his speeches, he's got big trouble."

Trump, however, did take time in his speech to recognize Carryn Owens, the widow of Navy Chief William “Ryan” Owens, who was killed in the military raid in Yemen that Trump ordered after he took office.

"Ryan's legacy is etched into eternity," Trump said.

Many noted that Trump’s speech was a departure from his usual pointed and attacking speech.

"He did something extraordinary and for people who have been hoping that he would become unifying, hoping that he would find some way to become presidential, they should be happy with that moment," Jones said.

Said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky: "Donald Trump did indeed become presidential tonight, and I think we'll see that reflected in a higher approval rating," on CNN afterward.
