U.S. to Accept 100,000 Refugees from Ukraine

On Thursday, the White House announced that the United States will take in 100,000 Ukrainian refugees and provide $1 billion to fund humanitarian aid initiatives for the Ukrainian people.
This announcement comes as President Joe Biden is in Brussels for a summit with U.S. NATO allies.
According to a news release from the White House, the U.S. will “provide more than $1 billion in new funding towards humanitarian assistance for those affected by Russia’s war in Ukraine and its severe impacts around the world, including a marked rise in food insecurity, over the coming months.”
The funding will go toward “food, shelter, clean water, medical supplies and other forms of assistance” for those displaced by the war.
The U.S. will also provide an additional $320 million for “democracy and human rights funding to Ukraine and its neighbors,” the briefing added.
Further, the U.S. will accept up to 100,000 refugees fleeing Russian aggression in Ukraine and will work to develop “new programs with a focus on welcoming Ukrainians who have family members in the United States.”
According to the UN Refugee Agency, more than 3.7 million people have fled Ukraine since Russian forces invaded on February 24. The BBC reports that around 6.5 million people have been displaced within Ukraine, and a further 12 million are thought to be stuck where they are and unable to leave war-torn areas. Of the more than 6 million displaced people inside the country, it is believed that more than half are women, many of whom are pregnant, disabled or a victim of violence, the International Organisation for Migration reports.
So far, Poland – which neighbors Ukraine – has welcomed the highest number of refugees (2,206,119), followed by Romania (572,754), Moldova (376,748), Hungary (336,701), Slovakia (263,959) and Belarus (6,341). More than 271,254 people have also fled to Russia.
As of this writing, the U.S. has only accepted several hundred refugees.
