An Arizona woman in a vegetative state gave birth last month in a long-term care facility, and police are investigating the incident.

According to NBC News, a Phoenix woman, who is unable to move or speak, gave birth to a baby boy on December 29, at the Hacienda HealthCare facility.

According to Global News, the staff at the facility were unaware that the woman, who had been a patient there for 26 years, was pregnant. Employees only realized that the woman was pregnant when she began to make moaning sounds while she was delivering the baby.

Global News reports that the baby is safe and healthy, but the question of how this happened still remains.

In a statement, the facility said, “we have recently become aware of a deeply disturbing incident involving the health and safety of a Hacienda resident.”

“As an organization, Hacienda HealthCare stands fully committed to getting to the truth of what, for us, represents an unprecedented matter," the statement continued.

The facility, which has room for over 50 patients, is currently under investigation by police and the Arizona Department of Health Services. According to NBC News, the Arizona DHS has conducted a welfare probe, but at this time, no new information about the rape and birth have been released.
