Too Clever By Half
by Berni Dymet

Luke 4:29 They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff.

There's a well known journalist who lives just around the corner from me.  He's also well known for being a very vocal atheist.  It turns out his dad was a minister and he didn't much like his dad.

He's clever, articulate, I've read a lot of his stuff - and he has a lot of reasons for rejecting God.  Some are intellectual.  Some of them are pretty valid criticisms of organized religion.

I mean Jesus has been out healing people and preaching with power - He gets to his home town of Nazareth - starts doing what He does - healing and preaching.  And someone says - "Who does this guy think He is?  Isn't this Joseph and Mary's kid?  Get Him out of here."  And in fact, his own town folk try and throw Him off a cliff.

It strikes me that this journalist and the people of Jesus' home town have something in common.

They never really stopped to listen, to chat, and to get to know this Jesus who claims to be the Son of God.  Sad really.
