Why did God Rest?

by Berni Dymet

Gen. 1:31-2:3 God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their multitude.  And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work that he had done.  So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation.

One of the things we all need in our often busy, hectic, challenging lives is … rest.  Rest from our labors.  Rest from the cares of this world.

I've always found it absolutely fascinating that even God rested.  Now - that's kind of weird, because if God is God - surely, He didn't get tired.  Can you imagine God dozing off in the afternoon with a universe to run?!

No - that's not why He rested.  He wasn't exhausted from the effort of creation - as huge a job as that was.  God rested for a different reason.

He saw everything that He'd made - everything, the whole cosmos, utterly gob smacking and astounding - He looked at it and concluded that "it was very good."  God rested, in order to enjoy what He'd created.

And as much as you and I need a rest sometimes because we're tired - every day in fact - we also need to rest, to take a break, to enjoy what we've done.  Without that - life's no fun.
