Read: Titus 3

Key Verse: “But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because they are unprofitable and useless.” - Titus 3:9

How do you respond when someone begins to gossip and share information with you that you should not be covering? Do you have people that try to pull you into controversy? Have you had any theological conversations that led to unhealthy division? How do you graciously step back from a dialogue that is a waste of time? Are you able to change the topic when needed? This verse is a reality check for Titus: he will need to avoid many conversations that are unprofitable!

Avoiding foolish talk is not an easy task. The first step is to be someone who speaks with wisdom and compassion. Your own words set the tone for your conversations. The next step is to carefully choose your closest friends. Another step is to ask God for courage to put limits on unhealthy words that are spoken to you by other people. There are many ways to graciously change the topic. Slander can be subtle, gossip appears to be a tasty morsel, a critical spirit comes from pride, and controversies are a damaging distraction. Steer clear of these traps and speak words of life as often as you can!
