Holy Attraction [Part 1]
Are you ready for some good news?
Every good decision that you have made toward whatever is right, noble or pure is a gift from God. Any moment that you have been attracted to holiness is a God moment of Holy Attraction!
Today’s Text: ““But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, … And he arose and came to his father.” (Luke 15:17–21)
We were born in sin. As such, we have nothing but sin-tainted spectacles through which we see the world and our lives.
In and of ourselves, we can do no good thing. Which leaves us with a very important question. How do you explain all the good decisions that you have made? If you aren’t a Christian, how do you explain all the times in your life when you made a selfless choice or resisted a temptation? If you are a Christian, how did you become drawn to God in the first place?
God has always been there. Even before you knew Him, it was His mercy that enabled you to make a good choice. It’s what happened to the younger brother in Jesus’ famous parable. The younger son disgraced his dad, squandered his inheritance and found himself alone and hungry amongst the pigs. There, in the midst of his folly and squalor, the younger brother “came to himself.” He suddenly longed for home. He felt allured by the prospect of a better life. He remembered the lamb chops on his father’s grill. He wanted to go home. For the first time, in a long time, he felt drawn to the right path.
It’s a beautiful picture of the God moment of Holy Attraction. The lost son was attracted to the father.
It’s a nourishing and delightful enterprise to uncover your God moments of Holy Attraction. Think back to the good decisions that you’ve made. Remember the moments when you could have taken the wrong path (or stayed on the wrong path) and something (Someone) allured you toward a better way. Think about all the positive changes you’ve ever made in your life. All of those moments – all of them – are God moments. God has always been there beckoning, calling and leading you homeward. And that’s the Gospel!
