Wear the Robe Your Father Gives You [Part 2]

Are you ready for some good news?

Others might try to strip you of the symbols of the Father’s favor but no one can ever take the grace of God from you!

Today’s Text: “Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors.(Genesis 37:3, ESV)

Joseph’s father, Jacob, unwisely flaunted his favoritism toward Joseph by giving his beloved son an ornate tunic. Joseph’s brothers hated Joseph all the more because of the symbol of their father’s favor upon the youngest sibling.

So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the robe of many colors that he wore.(Genesis 37:23, ESV)

They couldn’t stand Joseph receiving their father’s favor, so they stripped him of the symbol of Jacob’s affection. Then, cruelly, the brothers took the robe, dipped it in goat’s blood and presented it to their father. The patriarch of course assumed that the bloodied robe was evidence that a wild animal had devoured Joseph. Jacob’s heart was wrenched.

Interestingly, the image of the robe would appear repeatedly in the story of Joseph’s journey from pit to pinnacle. It next appeared in Potiphar’s house where Potiphar’s wife attempted to seduce the attractive, intelligent Hebrew slave. When the chaste Joseph fled, Potiphar’s wife grasped his garment. Then, the lying woman used the robe as “evidence” that Joseph had made advances against her.

Just when it seemed that every robe that Joseph wore got him in trouble, an astonishing twist took place. Pharaoh promoted the prophetic Joseph to second in command over all of Egypt.

And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain about his neck.(Genesis 41:41–42, ESV)

Suddenly, the man who had been stripped of his robe by his lying brothers and by his master’s lying wife, was adorned with robes of royalty.

Later, when Joseph revealed himself to his brothers, he lavished them with new clothes.

The robe was a symbol. Outward adornment comes and goes. But the no one could take away the favor of God from Joseph’s life. Others might try to strip you or desecrate the symbols of God favor, but no one can ever take away the grace of God from you. And that’s the Gospel!
