Destroy this Temple [Part 2]

Are you ready for some good news?

The temple has been destroyed. Jesus is now our meeting place!

Today’s Text: “So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body.” (John 2:18–21, ESV)

After Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, God was separated from His people because the holiness of God cannot coexist with sin. But, as we see in Exodus 19, God still desired to meet with His people. God chose a representative, Moses, to come close to Him on Mount Sinai. The people were allowed to carefully approach the edge of the mountain, while Lord descended on the mountain in fire. Yet afterward the people were still asking, “When can we meet with God?”

God then gave the people a tabernacle. There, in the inmost place, separated by a veil, the high priest could meet with God and offer sacrifices once a year on behalf of the people. But the people must have wondered, “When will we meet with God?”

When David established his monarchy, God promised that one of David’s offspring would build a house for God. So Solomon built a glorious temple – a new meeting place with God. That temple stood until Babylon came to destroy the temple and take the people into exile. By the waters of Babylon, the people cried, “When can we go and meet with God?”

God allowed the people to return home, and the first order of business was to rebuild the temple. It was to that second temple that Jesus Christ came. “Destroy this temple,” Jesus said, “and I will raise it again in three days.” It was, perhaps, the most shocking statement any spiritual leader had ever made. Destroy the beloved temple?!!  As John explains, “But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said.” (John 2:21-22)

It has always been the heart of God to have a meeting place with His people. What do you need to meet with God? All that you need is Jesus. He is our meeting place. He is our everything. He is our Lamb who was slain. He is our sacrifice. He is our Priest. He is our Temple, and you can meet Him anytime, any place. And that’s the gospel!
