Answers in the Night
Daniel 2:17- 19
A nightmare that’s so vivid and so real that it wakes us up and then keeps us up is a tough one. Most of us get one of those life-threatening dreams once in a while, but dreams usually pick up on a lot of scattered, crazy fears and then weave them together into some weird, fanciful sequence. We can safely return to daylight sanity and forget about the crazy terrors in the night.
Not so Nebuchadnezzar! He got one of those wake me up dreams, but this one was not conjured up from his own fears and anxieties. Our author will make it clear that God delivered this dream directly to Nebuchadnezzar, and before Daniel and his friends lose their lives, God needs to reveal the secret dream to them. When facing life-threatening situations, Daniel knows how to get a prayer meeting going.
“Then Daniel returned to his house and explained to his friends, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azaria, the situation they were facing. He urged them to plead for compassion before the God of heaven concerning this secret so that Daniel and his friends would not be executed with the rest of the wisemen of Babylon. Then in a vision during the night God revealed to Daniel the secret.” Daniel 2:17-19
If I truly believe that when I pray I genuinely have God’s ear, then prayer is the most important thing I can do. I love how Daniel and his friends appeal to God’s merciful love for them and can you imagine the relief Daniel felt when the Lord revealed Nebuchadnezzar’s secret?
LORD, stir me to pray even when my life is not on the line. I find it so easy to get all caught up in trying to figure out how to solve problems myself and then gathering friends to help implement these ideas. Help me to follow Daniel’s priority. The first step is to connect with you, the only One who actually does know the future’s secrets.
