Rapping Stones

Luke 19:37-40

I was taking my Alabama tribe of grandkids over to go swimming at a friends in my pick up. Suddenly, I heard loud grunts and other strange linguistic sounds from the back seat. When I looked in the rear view mirror, my two-year-old grandson was pointing his finger at the radio, and in his unknown tongue was instructing me that it was time for some music. When I turned on KLTY, the song was:

“He’s making diamonds, diamonds
Making diamonds out of dust
He is refining in his timing
He’s making diamonds out of us.

I won’t be afraid to shine” (Hawk Nelson Lyrics)

My grandson has a loud voice, like Jack Wyrtzen, his great grandfather, and he began shouting out “diamonds, diamonds” over and over again loud and clear.

He’s got the spirit of the crowd as they worship during Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. I need to join my him and not the Pharisees who got all upset about all that loud praise as the crowd descended the Mt. of Olives toward Golden Gate.

“Now as He was already near the descent of the Mt. of Olives, the entire vast multitude began rejoicing and praising God with a loud voice over all the mighty acts they had seen. They were saying,

‘Blessed is the One who comes, the King
The One who comes in the name of the LORD.
Peace in Heaven
And glory in the Highest.’

Now some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples.’ He replied, ‘I tell you, if they were silent, the stones would cry out!’”  Luke 19:37-40

Note that it doesn’t say they were singing, but that they were saying. The crowd was shouting with joy and praise using a first century rap lyric.

LORD, help me to join this jubilant praise today rejoicing in Jesus’ mighty deeds as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
