Fevers and Hospitality

Luke 4:38-39

Right now my wife, Mary, has no kitchen and no suitable place to prepare and serve a meal for friends. Some dear friends came down to Midlothian on Tuesday to check out the renovations on our new house, but they insisted on taking us out. Why? Because they knew Mary’s gas stove and ovens are sitting on the floor in our old house and the kitchen and dining room in our new house is only half way together.  Mary can hardly wait to show hospitality again. This is one of her greatest gifts, and man, am I thankful that this present mess is only temporary.

When Peter’s mother-in law wanted to entertain Jesus and friends after the synagogue service where He exorcised a demon, it wasn’t a torn up house that prohibited her. It was a raging fever.

“Jesus stood up and left the synagogue. He entered Simon’s house, and his mother-in-law was burning up with a high fever. They asked Jesus to help her. He stood over her and rebuked the fever. It left her, and she immediately got up and began serving them.” - Luke 4:38-39

LORD, in a culture where we immediately grab for Tylenol and antibiotics, help me remember to call for help from the ultimate physician. In a culture where often the point of view is against a woman rising up to serve her guests in her home, help me to keep honoring my wife’s  incredible gift.
