Death By A Look

Psalm 119:33-40

Turn on a laptop, iPad, or simply take a peek at a smart phone when face-to-face time isn’t scintillating enough, and our eyes find a feast. There has never been a time when so much junk assaults our eyes. This can be more serious than a waste of time. It can be deadly.

In my meetings in Kenya as I introduced the pastors to the foundations of God’s Redemptive Story, we focused on the introduction of the ultimate bad character in God’s real life drama in Genesis 3. Carefully going back over the text on how Satan deceived Eve, I was struck by the fact that, after moving her to doubt God’s generous goodness (Genesis 3:1) and contradicting what God said about the consequence of disobeying our Creator, he simply stepped back and let her eyes take over.

“So when the woman saw that the tree looked good for food, that it was a delight to the eye, and desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate, and also gave to her husband with her, and they ate.” - Genesis 3:6

The writer of Psalm 119 knew that it wasn’t just Eve’s eyes that got her in trouble. All of us face this temptation, and the psalmist didn’t take this assault on his eyes lightly. He prayed,

“Turn my eyes from looking at worthless and evil stuff—things that can cast a spell.  Instead, give me life in Your ways.”

LORD, I can’t prevent my eyes from seeing a lot of trash as I live in Satan’s territory, but I can choose to allow Your Spirit to control what my eyes do next. Whether it’s a worthless movie, a titillating entertainment story, or a direct visual attack to lust, cause my eyes to pass on by. Keep my eyes focused on Your life-giving Way.
