Face to Face

Psalm 119:57-64

Nokia calls and Skype make it a lot easier to be in Kenya for 2 1/2 weeks while your wife is stateside, but telecommunication is not enough. What I long for when I’m away from Mary is face to face time.

On Tuesday I arrived at DFW and breezed through the passport check, even recovered my one bag quickly. The delay came because of my second package, the two canes my Kenyan brothers gave me, not to help me walk, but as a sign that they accepted me as a spiritual father. Kenyans strongly respect age, and the canes were their thanks for the teaching from the Word and a strong invitation to come back.

In Kenya the canes were securely padded and shrink wrapped. When I checked them at the gate in Nairobi, the attendant guaranteed they were checked all the way to Dallas. The empty carousel in Dallas proved they didn’t make it and filling out the required paper work delayed my reunion with Mary for more than an hour. In Psalm 119:58 the psalmist is not yearning for a reunion with his wife. He yearns for personal face time with his LORD.

“I tenderly desire Your Face (Your Presence) with all my heart. Be gracious to me according to Your Word.”

This psalmist lives intimacy with God. The LORD is his cherished possession (Ps. 119:57). His thoughts center on His ways (Ps. 119:59). He even wakes up at midnight and immediately begins to praise, thanking God that He makes right judgments (Ps. 119:62). He concludes this section of his psalm where every verse begins with the Hebrew letter “Heth” expressing that there is no place he can go on earth where he won’t find God’s gracious covenant love.

“The earth is full of Your loyal covenant love; teach me Your prescriptions for life.” - Psalm 119:64

LORD, I pray that when I teach I will not just be communicating a lot of information about You. Help those who listen to sense that I am spending close, intimate time with You and use the warmth of our relationship to entice them to hunger to get close to You as well. Thank you that the Apostle John promised that one day our present internal relationship will become face-to-face time.

“...we know that when He appears we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is.” 1 John 3:17
