A Precious Death

Psalm 116:15

My last couple of years as the senior pastor of Midlothian Bible Church I did a funeral every week and one week I did three. The funeral director in town thought I was on his staff. And these deaths were not all old folks. Some of them were children. This constant exposure to death caused me to have a problem with Psalm 116:15.

"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."

This hymn begins with the writer agonizing over the imminent threat of his own death. He prays for deliverance and the Lord answers and restores his life. He even concludes his psalm picturing himself going to the Temple, offering an offering, and then joining the congregation in praising God. If the death of His children is so precious to God then why does this child of God praise Him for deliverance from it?

The only answer is that death is not a good thing. The Hebrew word translates "precious" means "weighty," and it means that our Father in Heaven doesn't treat our death lightly. The precious reality is that after the brief pain we are united with our Father, and reunions between fathers and their children are precious.

LORD I praise You for bringing life and immortality into brilliant clarity by the resurrection of Your Son. Thank you that You will deliver us from death until we die, but then You will deliver us for good because we will be home forever.
