Not Tasting Death

Mark 9:1

Sunday afternoon I got to see two of my Southern Bible students get their Bachelor of Science in Biblical Studies. Khadra was the valedictorian with straight A’s and Gerard was the Salutatorian. Man, I’m proud of how they dug into learning how to track the Story from Genesis to Revelation, but the highlight of the graduation was to see Pastor Eddie B. Lane who graduated from Southern Bible in 1961 receive his Honorary  Doctorate Degree.

He was not the first black to attend Dallas Theological Seminary, but he was in the first wave, and then became a faculty member who came alongside black students and mentored them through their masters and sometimes doctoral programs. Dr. Lane served at Dallas seminary and pastored for 48 years, but he was not able to be present at the graduation. His precious wife took home his doctoral hood and diploma because three years ago, Dr. Lane went home to be with Jesus. Our school recognized him posthumously.

Death is a bitter taste that all of us will face unless we’re in that select group still living that the Apostle Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians 15. But there was another select group during Jesus’ earthly ministry that Jesus said would not taste death until they had seen the Kingdom of God. Right after telling us about the need to take up our cross and follow him to Calvary, Jesus also gave us not a taste of death, but of his glory.

“And Jesus said to them, ‘Count on it! I’m saying that some of you standing here will not taste death until they see the Kingdom of God come in power.’”   Mark 9:1

Who on earth is Jesus talking about that won’t die before the Kingdom comes? That’s our riddle until tomorrow.
