Calming Fear

Luke 1:30-33

Perpetrators, hit-and-run, assault rifles, hand grenades, and suicide vests. This guerilla warfare that strikes out against civilians anywhere, anytime, spreads fear. How do I know as I walk up the street to eat even in my hometown or go for a bike ride that a bomb won’t instantly bring sudden death?  Why can’t our leaders protect us?

The Virgin Mary was not fearful about security in Nazareth, but when suddenly she was in the presence of one of God’s most powerful angels, Gabriel, she was afraid. But God didn’t want her to be afraid. Immediately, Gabriel’s announcement calmed her fears, but it did far more than that. Mary would give birth to a baby who would become the Prince of Peace, the ruler who will ultimately end terrorism and death forever—the only Ruler who can calm our fears.

“And the angels said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Note this! You will conceive in your womb and you will bear a Son. You will call His name Jesus. He will be great, called the Son of the Highest.

The Lord God will give to Him the throne of David, His father, and He will rule over the House of Jacob forever and His Kingdom will never end.'” Luke 1:30-33

LORD, help me to rest in the power of Jesus, the Son of David, your Son. What a miracle that you caused Mary to conceive our Savior. Help me never to forget that his Kingdom will not fail. Terror and death will not ultimately win so I don’t need to fear. Use crises to open hearts to the freedom from fear that only Jesus can give.
