Don’t Be Afraid

Daniel 10:12-14

When Election Day comes and it’s important us to get out and vote. As we hear about the horrors of what will happen if our side doesn’t win, it’s important for us a believers in Jesus, not only here in the U.S., but around the world to allow Daniel to reveal to us that there are conflicts going on in the spiritual realm that powerfully effect the rise and fall of nations. As Daniel poured out his heart in prayer, he had no idea of the battles taking place in the heavenly realm—battles that determined the winners and losers as the tug of war between nations continues. God angelic messenger begins his revelation of this heavenly warfare with some comforting words:

“Then he said to me, ‘Don’t be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you gave your heart to gain understanding and to humble yourself before the face of your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. But the prince of the Persian kingdom stood in opposition against me twenty-one days. But then, note this, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me because the rulers of Persia were detaining me. But now I’ve come to explain what will happen to your people in the future days—a time yet to come.’”   Daniel 10:12-14

We’ve met the angel Gabriel in a previous vision and he is probably the one speaking to Daniel here. Here we also learn that the spiritual warfare the Apostle Paul tells us about in Ephesians 6 was going on long before. The “rulers of Persia” in this context were probably supernatural powers seeking to control the rulers of the Persian Empire, and to specifically turn against the Jews, Daniel’s people.

In Ezra we read about how the Samaritans try to stop the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the Temple. Later Gabriel will return to the battle in the heaven (10:20) and the result will be the end of the Persian Empire and the victories of Alexander the Great. We aren’t told a great deal about these cosmic wars, but as we wonder how history will enfold for us, we can rest in Gabriel’s words if we belong to God, “Fear not, you are a precious cherished one!”
LORD, help us as brothers and sisters in Christ to take to heart your word that we don’t need to be afraid. You are in control of history. You are in control of how the Story will end, and the results of the election will not be the end of the world.
