Early Morning Students
I just began another semester teaching Old Testament Survey I –Genesis through Esther at Southern Bible Institute. Get down the overall thrust of these books, and you’ve got the basic historical skeleton from Creation to the Persian Empire used by God to build His redemptive Story on in the Jewish Scriptures. These were Jesus’ Scriptures that He taught in the Temple. I pray my students will discover them as their Scriptures and allow them to transform their lives.
Teaching—it was at the core of Jesus’ earthly ministry. Even days before His enemies sprung the deadly trap against Him, after His return from a night on the Mt. of Olives to the Temple, each morning the people showed up to hear Him. They called Him “Rabbi, Teacher.”
“Now daily He was in the Temple teaching. Then each evening He went out and spent the night on the Mount of Olives. And all the people got up early and came to hear Him in the Temple.” Luke 21:37-38
For a few days all the people got up early to hear Him, but on Friday morning they shouted, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” Students can quickly change their mind about a teacher or professor. A godly teacher needs to teach the truth, not cuddle the crowd.
LORD, it’s a precious gift when students are receptive. Give me this gift in the classroom this semester, but also help me to be willing to teach them things that Jesus wants them to hear, not what they want to hear. Protect me from living for the applause of the crowd. I need Your Spirit to teach through me today.
