Listen To The Queen-Mother

Daniel 5:10-13

When fingers started writing close to the lampstand above King Belshazzar’s head on the plastered wall in his palace, there were a lot of lords and ladies in the room, but none had a clue what MENE, MENE, TEKEl, and PARSIN meant. This is the time to realize that maybe the answers will come from someone not in the room, especially a wise woman, in this case the Queen Mother.

“Because of the words of the king and his lords, the Queen-Mother entered the banqueting hall. She responded to the king’s problem and said, ‘O king, live forever! Stop being so frightened and distraught in your face and pale.  There is a man in your kingdom in whom the spirit of the holy gods is present. In the days of your father, illumination, insight, and wisdom—wisdom like the wisdom of the gods—were found in him.

King Nebuchadnezzar, your father, made him chief of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and diviners because an extraordinary spirit, a spirit of knowledge and understanding to interpret dreams, reveal riddles, and untie difficult problems were discovered in this Daniel whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now call this Daniel and the interpretation will be made known.’” Daniel 5:10-13

At faculty meetings at Southern Bible the Lord has emphasized to me how important it is to listen to the wisdom and insight of the women on our faculty sitting at the table. At Belshazzar’s feast his harem women were there drinking the wine along with the thousands of the king’s lords. But the Queen Mother from the days of King Nebuchadnezzar wasn’t at the party. She had to come in when she got word that the king had shaking legs and was terrified because of the writing on the wall. She remembered Daniel and was bold and skillful in telling the king exactly the godly man he needed.

LORD, we don’t know this woman’s name, but thank you for the good role she plays in this crisis time in Belshazzar’s life. In our relationships as brothers and sisters in Christ help us honor the mature, wise women and if they are not at the table of influence, help us to get them there.
