Acid Reflux

Proverbs 1:29-31

In Texas a normal rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding is almost always barbecue beef and chicken, hot sausage, and even some smoked ribs thrown in. There are beans, potato salad, regular salad with lettuce, tomato and onions, and for dessert—banana pudding. Now, I know for sure that if I eat all of this less than four hours before I go to bed, the entire hot concoction will regurgitate out of the acid environment of my stomach, leak through my sphincter, and my esophagus will react violently to the burning. My entire system will engage--phlegm, violent coughing, and even throwing up.

Mary warns me every time of the danger. “David, don’t eat. Remember what happens when you do too close to bedtime!” But it’s so easy not to listen to your wife when the brisket smells like a meal from heaven. In Proverbs Lady Wisdom is even stronger than my Mary about the consequences if I refuse to listen.

“Because you hated knowledge and didn’t choose to fear the LORD, because you weren’t willing to listen to my counsel, you spurned all my rebukes; therefore, you will eat the fruit of your own way, you will be sated with the results of your own plan.” Proverbs 1:29-31

LORD, when I’m coughing my head off, I promise never to eat barbecue too late again. I need Your strength long before I get into this mess. I don’t want to have to re-digest my stupid decisions. Strengthen me when faced with the temptation to do self-destructive acts to remember Your counsel and to turn away from the delicious treats Satan tries to get me to eat. Help me remember all that throwing up that always comes in the end when I don’t listen to You.
