I’m The Greatest
The sprint to the finish had begun and Hillary and Trump were pumping those arms and legs hard. Trump boarded “Trump Force One,” a Boeing 757 he bought from Microsoft mogul Paul Allen, refitted with plenty of gold and the Trump family crests. And Hillary boarded her newly designed Boeing 737 with her brand, “Stronger Together,” in sky blue on the side. In the debates shouted, “I’m greater. I’m more qualified!” Before we get cynical about all this pumping, boasting, and claims to greatness and ability, we need to recognize that’s what you do if you crave power on earth. Just don’t confuse all this with God and His Son’s Kingdom. Even Jesus’ disciples at the Last Supper got confused and started a fight over who was greater.
“Now an argument erupted over which one of them was considered to be the greatest. And Jesus said to them, ‘The Gentile kings lord it over their subjects, and they flex their power over them. They in turn call their rulers, Benefactors. You are not to rule like this. Instead, the greatest among you will be as the youngest and the one who leads as the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who serves or the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.’” Luke 22:24-27
In order to make wise decisions a leader needs to be connected with reality. They need to know what’s actually happening, what the needs are, and who has the skills to meet these needs. The best way to get the facts is to get right down and serve others.
Want to know what’s actually happening in Washington? Ask the help in the White House and those who serve in the lunchroom on Capitol Hill. If we want to actually change things, not only in the country but in the world, we need to stop strutting about our greatness, take off our fancy clothes, get a towel, and start washing feet with Jesus.
LORD, thanks for the football coaches in Midlothian I had lunch with a couple of days ago who don’t just have their players lift weights. They also have them pick up children’s books and read to the younger kids. Help me to always remember who actually is the Greatest, and that there is power in serving.
