The Good of the Goad

The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails-given by one shepherd.”  Ecclesiastes." 12:11

In Tuesday’s devotional, we discovered how the right THEY guide us and direct to stay on track with God’s plans for our lives. The illustration is a picture of a goad. In today’s verse, Solomon reminds us of that same reality. The right THEY are the “wise” who are not afraid to speak up when we need correction. While that kind of correction is not always easy to hear, the fact is that it always helpful.

Who in your life gives you an honest assessment of where you are and where you are headed? Who can you trust to guide you in the right direction – God’s direction – when you get off track? Those are the right THEY in your life. Those are the people God has placed in your path to help you get the most out of life. Don’t “kick against the goads;” instead, go with the goads, and experience a straight path that leads to God’s purpose for your life.

Take a minute to pray for the right attitude when you are confronted with “words of the wise.” Ask God to keep you humble before Him and open for the kind of correction you need when you drift off-track.

Think of a time when a friend has corrected you and helped you get back on track with God’s plan for your life. Take a minute to let that person know how you appreciate that situation. Thank them for being the “goad” you needed at that time.
