You can see God from anywhere if your mind is set to love and obey Him. – A.W. Tozer

When I'm out playing golf, someone inevitably asks me what I do. Honestly, I don't like telling them I’m a pastor because it's usually followed by an awkward silence, then they make a quick point to clean up their language. Ha! The next question is often, "Well, since I've got you here, what do you think about…?" and they ask me their one burning question.

In John 4, the adulterous Samaritan woman at the well asks Jesus her burning question, "Jesus, Samaritans say Mount Gerizim; Jews say Jerusalem. Which one is the right place to worship?"

Mount Gerizim or Jerusalem? Easy question, right? A or B. But Jesus said that it was neither! He knew of forthcoming events that would make both the Temple in Jerusalem and Mount Gerizim irrelevant: His coming crucifixion and resurrection, His ushering in the New Covenant – a new way of doing life, a new way of knowing God in an intimate way.

Jesus spoke to the woman about a new kind of temple that was coming, one where His Spirit would reside, where living water would flow. Paul spoke about it after the fact:

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? – 1 Corinthians 6:19

God no longer dwells in the Holy of Holies in the temple – He is in our hearts. Our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit. Now anyone can have full access to God. This means that (provided you take your body with you) you now have the temple wherever you go. And that means any place and any time can and should be a place of worship.

While we often connect worship with church buildings, you can worship anywhere: at home, at the kitchen table, kneeling by your bed at night, in your office, or even while you're stuck in traffic. The Holy Spirit lives within you and can give you everything you need. You can worship whenever and wherever you want… like right now, right where you are in this moment.

Jesus, thank You for giving me the ability to worship You whenever and wherever I want! I am comforted knowing that You are always with me and in me. Amen.
