He that but looketh on a plate of ham and eggs to lust after it hath already committed breakfast with it in his heart. —C.S. Lewis
A great marriage comes from two people walking in the Spirit, loving one another.
I keep saying this over and over again because it's so important... and I keep saying it over and over again because I also see the worst of the worst. Walking in the Spirit is not just the key to a great marriage – it's the key to protecting yourself and those you love from the very worst expressions of the flesh.
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. —Galatians 5:19–21
Why would someone choose to live this way? In all honesty, I don't think most people who find themselves at this level of fleshly living consciously intended to get there. I don't think anybody walks down the aisle to get married thinking, "I'm going to hate this person, and cause discord and jealousy." No. Yet, this is where many of us end up. Why? Because, even though we started with good intentions, we walked in the wrong way.
So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. —Galatians 5:16–17
Please hear me: One of the greatest gifts of marriage is that it exposes when we are living in the flesh rather than walking by the Spirit. When your flesh fights against those things you really want to do, it feels like a war, and you might feel like you have to surrender to your fleshly desires. But remember, the victory has already been won on the cross. The battles will continue, but right now, in Christ, you are alive. In Him, you're free. You have the Holy Spirit living inside you. Surrender to Him, and He will lead you through the battle.
Father, I don't like looking at my flesh. Show me where my thoughts are going if they are not lined up with Your Word. Give me willingness to face my flesh, dispel it in Your name! Deliver me from the worst of the worst my flesh could be. Amen.
