The reason why many are still troubled, still seeking, still making little forward progress is because they haven’t yet come to the end of themselves. — A. W. Tozer
Death is the beginning of life.
I know that sounds crazy, but a lot of things in Christianity sound crazy—and I’m not even talking about physical death leading to eternal life. I’m talking about dying to the law so you can live right now.
“Through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.” (Galatians 2:19)
The word for isn’t in the original Greek. The verse literally says, “so that I might live God.” Wow. Think about that. Something powerful happens when we abandon all our petty religious rules. We’re set free for something bigger when we quit trying to please God while living for ourselves. What did Paul say?
I died to the law—to the rules that have dictated my living—so that I might live God.
What does it look like to “live God”?
- It isn’t mandatory quiet time every day. It’s freedom from guilt and freedom to engage with God all the time.
- It isn’t perfect adherence to the Ten Commandments. It’s peace that God has my best interests in mind, and I can trust Him to guide me moment by moment.
- It isn’t to-the-penny tithing of 10 percent. It’s giddy generosity inspired by the Spirit and the awareness that everything belongs to God.
- It’s not about your political party. It’s seeing people the way God sees them and releasing the need to be correct.
Ultimately, it’s always about letting Jesus live in and through us!
No, “living God” isn’t marching within the confines of a bunch of rules. It’s dancing within the current of ever-flowing love. That’s the dance of grace He invites you to—and that’s an invitation worth dying for.
Giver of Life, I’ve tried so many methods of resuscitation for this dry soul. Nothing satisfies. Make my life in the Spirit new and different today. Lead me away from the rules, and show me Your way of living, one step at a time. Amen.
