We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give. — Winston S. Churchill

What is a blessed person supposed to do with a little extra cash?

We have lots of choices: Put some in a 401K and an IRA. When those are full, put some away for a rainy day. Invest in some extra square footage and then purchase some miles around the world. Buy some stuff to fill those square feet and some gear to accompany you on your trip. Become a foodie, a techie, or a connoisseur of something exotic.

If you have a little extra (think about your jar full of change, for starters), there are plenty of opportunities to spend it. But there are some attitudes that those who are materially blessed should avoid:

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God… (1 Timothy 6:17)

Don’t find your security in material wealth. Don’t let it define you. Don’t put your hope in it. In short, don’t let your money replace God. With the phrase “this present world,” Paul suggests that the economies found in heaven and on earth differ greatly. And we aren’t to cling tightly to earthly wealth when there’s heavenly hope within our reach.

So if wealth isn’t supposed to be our source of security and trust, how are we supposed to handle all that extra cash?

Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. (1 Timothy 6:18)

Be ready to give at a moment’s notice. Invite Jesus into your wealth no matter how much you have. Ask Him what He’d like to do with you and your resources today. Because what you release in this present world has a ridiculously awesome exchange rate in eternity.

In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. (1 Timothy 6:19)

Take hold of the life that is truly life. Not only is giving better than getting, but when you give, you get—both on this side and on the other side of death. When that time comes, you’ll experience the everlasting presence of God. And, really, when you consider His presence—what other wealth is there?

Giver of All Good Things, You’re asking me to choose between an economy I can see—bills in my hand, numbers in my retirement account—and an economy of faith, hope, and love. Only by Your strength can I choose the intangible economy of eternity and stick with that choice for life. This has to be You, Lord! It won’t happen in my own strength. So I’m giving You my all right now. Do with me and my possessions as You wish. Amen.
