An Emotional Furnace

David had just said, "It's been useless--all my watching over [Nabal's] property in the wilderness so that nothing of his was missing. He has paid me back evil for good. May God deal with David, be it ever so severely, if by morning I leave alive one male of all who belong to him!"  1 Samuel 25:21-22

Have you ever overreacted? Blown up? Experienced an emotional tsunami? You were hanging in and hanging tough through a difficult time, but then something happened ... the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back ... and you let loose. That's what happened to David in today's passage.

David and his ragtag army were running from Saul in the Desert of Moan. A wealthy man, named Nabal, lived in the area and David sent a few of his men to request some food. When Nabal refused, David detonated! He sent 400 armed soldiers to kill Nabal and his shepherds. Talk about killing a gnat with a sledgehammer! Thankfully, Nabal's wife, Abigail, intervened and stopped the massacre.

During the journey of life, each of us spend some time on the emotional edge. We cannot escape fatigue, disappointment, and stress. These are dangerous times. Reactions (and overreactions) can cause much collateral damage. But our trust in God, even in the heat of pressure cooker situations, makes all the difference. You can trust Him and depend on Him ... even in the midst of an emotional furnace.

Father, someone reading this today is going through a very difficult time. Life presents challenges from the outside and within. In the midst of the heat, cool them with the calm of Your Spirit. In Jesus' name. Amen.
