He Can Be Trusted | Job 38:1-5
Job 38:1-5 Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm. He said: "Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?
Job had been through hell on earth. He lost his possessions, his children, and his health. Discouragement set in like a winter blizzard, and he began to question God’s love. Finally God responds. Quite honestly, I want God to come with tenderness and comfort. I admit that after all Job has been through, God’s “Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me” sounds…a little harsh. But remember, the anchor we hold onto during the difficult times is God’s character. He is all-loving…even when he tells us to “brace” ourselves.
In our passage today, God reminds Job why He can be trusted. He is eternal—there was never a time when He was not; there will never be a time when He is not. He is independent—He depends on no one or no thing for His existence. He didn’t need Job to hold one end of the tape measure when He marked off the dimensions of the earth. He is the Creator—whatever exists is created by and sustained by His gracious hand.
You see, God knew that the answer to Job’s questions was not “Why?” but “Who?” When we understand that the “Who?” behind all our life is God…that knowledge translates into trust.
Lord, our prayer today is this—Let our knowledge of who You are allow us to trust You every step of the journey. In Christ’s Name. Amen.
