Read Ephesians 6:10-18 (ESV)
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints…
Who does Paul list as our real enemies?
It sure seems like the world is becoming more and more hostile towards Christianity every day. But this shouldn’t surprise us. In John 15:18, Jesus Himself said, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” Since the beginning, there has been a spiritual battle going on between Satan and God. Thankfully, we know who wins! In Christ, the victory is already won!
But as we wait for Jesus’ return and final triumph, we are engaged in this battle. Paul points out that we are not fighting other humans, even though it certainly seems like it. We are fighting spiritual forces, therefore, we need spiritual equipment. Thankfully, God did not enlist us for service and then leave us unequipped.
First, we can’t forget to tie on our belt of truth. We live a world that is saying there is no objective truth. The world is trying to redefine reality and Satan is the father of those lies (John 8:44). It’s worth noting that we slip our “sword of the Spirit” (which is the Word of God) into our belt of truth when we aren’t wielding it. We have to remember that God’s Word is true and we can trust it. The sword of the Spirit is the only offensive weapon that God gave us but it is a powerful one. God’s Word is much more powerful than any lie that Satan tries to employ against us.
We also have a breastplate of righteousness to protect our hearts. In Christ, we are righteous before God only because of Jesus’s righteousness. When we seek to live holy lives and obey God’s Word, we are strengthened in our righteousness and our hearts are protected from our accuser.
Satan is firing off lies at a rapid rate so we need to take up our shield of faith and our helmet of salvation so that we will not be vulnerable to his attack. He likes to aim for our heads, so make sure to protect and renew your mind!
Finally, we need our shoes so that we can stand when under attack and also so that we can go forward and share the Gospel of peace with others. We may be at war with Satan but we can be at peace with God and with each other.
Friends, He has given us everything we need to fight. We just have to remember to “put it on” and “take it up.” Then, we’ll be battle ready!
Father, thank You for giving me everything I need to experience victory in You. Strengthen me for the fight and continue to train me for battle. Amen.
