Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 1 Peter 1:13
"In every minister's life there should be traces of stern labour. Brethren, do something; do something; DO SOMETHING. While Committees waste their time over resolutions, do something. While Societies and Unions are making constitutions, let us win souls. Too often we discuss, and discuss, and discuss, while Satan only laughs in his sleeve.... I pray you, be men of action all of you. Get to work and quit yourselves like men."*
These words from Spurgeon ring clear from today's verse. The apostle Peter was writing to a group of people getting ready to face persecution. His message was not, "Find a cave and hide!" but rather, "It is time to prepare!" Prepare your minds for action--this is not a time to join a book club. Prepare your heart for self-control--you are going to feel like running, but you have to stand firm. Place your hope fully on grace--challenging times are coming. Just as you have experienced God's grace in the past, He has more to give.
My challenge today is for those who always have a plan to do something ... starting tomorrow. My challenge today is for those who use "I need more information" as a delay tactic. My challenge today is for those who would rather discuss the finer points of theology over a cup of coffee than share the Gospel with a friend. My challenge today is for those who would rather critique the service than serve the church. For God's sake--DO SOMETHING!
Father, please point out our areas of inaction, bring the conviction of the Spirit, give us the courage to repent, and make us people of action. In Jesus' name. Amen.
