"I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I'm just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then." Joshua 14:11
One of my favorite characters in all of Scripture is a man named Caleb, a member of the twelve undercover agents sent by Moses to check out the Promised Land. While ten from the team convinced Israel that the land was unconquerable, Caleb, along with Joshua, said, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it" (Numbers 13:30). Four decades later, Joshua and Caleb, the only ones left from the faithless generation, entered the Promised Land. At eighty-five years old, Caleb was as strong, vigorous, and visionary as ever.
The word Scripture uses to describe this choice servant is "wholehearted" (Numbers 14:24; Joshua 14:8,9,14). He was a man whose heart was ignited with a passion to follow hard after God. He held nothing back. He did not doubt God's promises or power. He was sold out, all in, ready to go wherever God called him to go and do whatever God called him to do.
We are in desperate need of more wholehearted servants like Caleb. We need men and women who are using all their gifts and resources to serve God until He calls them home. There is no such thing as retirement in the service of the Lord. Whether you are 15, 25, 45 or 85--PRESS ON!
Heavenly Father, give us physical, emotional, and spiritual strength to follow hard after You all the days of our lives. Never let us retire from Your service. May the addition of years produce vigor and vision. May we be described as wholehearted servants of the living God. In Jesus' name. Amen.
