Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Go south to the road--the desert road--that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means "queen of the Ethiopians"). Acts 8:26-27
In Acts 6, when the Apostles were looking for some men to help them, they sought those who were "known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom." Philip fit the bill. Driven from Jerusalem by persecution, he went to Samaria to proclaim Christ. God honored his efforts. In fact, so many people were trusting in Christ that Peter and John went to Samaria to help out.
But during the awakening in Samaria, God told Philip to leave the area. What? God was demonstrating His power. People were coming to Christ. Philip was right in the middle of the action, but God gave him a new assignment. From the spiritual activity of Samaria, God sent Philip to a desert road. It was on the road that Philip met a man in charge of the treasury for the Ethiopian queen. Philip shared the Gospel. The man trusted in Jesus and was baptized. And, no doubt, the important official shared the message back in Ethiopia.
Do you feel like God has taken you out of the action? Do you feel like He has placed you on a desert road? Remember, God never wastes your time. Whether you are in the hubbub of spiritual activity or alone on your "desert road," God is working His plan. Stay on the journey ... keep looking up ... get ready. God has an eternally important assignment just for you.
Father, whether we are right in the midst of tremendous spiritual activity or in a dry, deserted place, help us keep our eyes on You. Wherever we are in our spiritual journey help us see Your next assignment. We don't want to miss it! In Jesus' name. Amen.
