God Knows You

Read Psalm 139:1-4 (ESV)

O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether.

How does it make you feel to know that God knows you so intimately?

For many of us, the idea of having someone constantly watching our every move would freak us out. The concept of meeting someone who could not just read our thoughts in real time but also predict our future thoughts would be unnerving to say the least. We loathe the idea of someone intruding on our privacy and would not willingly allow someone to bug our phones or watch our every move inside our own homes.

And yet, the God of the universe is able to do all of those things. He knows everything about us. The secret sin that we try to hide. The hurtful words we think about others but refrain from saying. He knows the real heart and attitude behind our words and actions. He sees us just as we are. Unfiltered. We are completely vulnerable and laid bare before Him.

And yet, David, the author of Psalm 139, viewed the fact that God knew Him so intimately as a good thing. David knew God’s omniscience is for our benefit as well. God knows what is best for us, even when we can’t understand His ways. But if we follow Him, He guides us and protects us. In verse 5, David says, “You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.” As a parent encloses a baby’s play area to keep him safe and holds his hand to cross the street, God hems us within His boundaries and guides us along His paths for us for our own protection.

David knew that God is not just all-knowing, He is omnipresent (everywhere present). There is nowhere that we can go to get away from God. He is with us always. David knew that God had been with him from the womb and that He would be with him forever. Before David had conscious thought and before He was even born, God knew him and knew how David’s life would unfold. “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them (v .16)

When we yield our lives to Him and submit to His ways, it is no longer unnerving that God knows us so intimately. Instead, it is a great comfort that God knows all about us and loves us regardless. There is great peace in knowing that He is always present with us. Friends, you are fully known and never alone.

God, You know me better than I know myself and yet You still love me. You have been with me since before I was born, and You know my future. Thank You for Your loving presence in my life and for guiding me with Your great wisdom. Amen.
