He Keeps His Promises

Read Luke 1:68-70

Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has come to His people and redeemed them. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David (as He said through His holy prophets of long ago)...

Reflect

What prophecies concerning Jesus from the Old Testament come to your mind when you read this passage?

One of my favorite things to reflect on during the Advent season is the faithfulness of God. I look forward to reading passages of Old Testament Scripture that point to Jesus as our Savior. There are numerous prophecies concerning the birth of the Messiah. The prophet Isaiah made one very specific prophecy more than 700 years before Jesus was born.

“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and will call His name Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14).  Well before Jesus’s birth, the Scriptures foretold that He would be born of a virgin.

Even before Isaiah’s prophecy, we knew from God’s covenant with David that this Messiah would come from the house of David. In 2 Samuel 7, God promised David that His dynasty would never end. Someone from David’s line would always reign. Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of that promise.

But God’s promise that the Messiah would be born of a woman goes back even farther than David. It goes back to the Garden of Eden. After Adam and Eve sinned against God, He cursed the serpent and said, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers, He will crush your head, and you will strike His heel.”

Back at the very beginning, God promised that He’d send someone born of a woman to save humanity. Satan might strike His heel (Jesus’s death), but Jesus would crush Satan’s head. Jesus’s resurrection ensures the victory, and His second coming will finish Satan off for good.

Friends, God keeps His promises. Just as His holy prophets foretold long before Jesus was born, each prophecy that proclaimed His coming was fulfilled. Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel. He keeps His promises.

Pray

Father, thank You for Your promises. Even though we can’t fathom all that You are doing, You are working out Your purposes as we wait for You to come again. You deserve all the glory, honor, and praise. Amen.
