Preach!

July 24

Read Romans 10:14-15 (ESV)

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Reflect

Who do you know that doesn’t know the Good News of Jesus Christ?

Many people read today’s verse and think only of overseas missionaries. They think of people like Jim Elliot and his fellow missionaries who sacrificed their lives to preach the Gospel to people who have never heard of Jesus in Ecuador. They think of the missions to foreign countries that their churches support financially. Overseas missionaries have beautiful feet indeed!

But are we all supposed to pack up and go overseas? I don’t necessarily think so. Did you know that here in the US, even with all of our churches and the history of Christianity in our country, many consider our culture to be “post-Christian?” This does vary depending on geographical location. But Christianity is generally on the decline in our country and in many other Western developed countries.

So what does this mean for Christians in these cultures? It means that we have an opportunity to be faithful to our calling to preach the Good News! We don’t need to panic. We don’t need to be worried. As always, God has everything under control. But we do need to share the hope that we have in Jesus Christ with the people around us.

The apostle Paul certainly embodied the verse from Isaiah that he was quoting in today’s verse. Paul had the beautiful feet of someone who preached the good news. Paul dedicated his life to traveling all over the known world preaching the Gospel to those who hadn’t heard it.

But you know, when he wasn’t able to travel anymore because he was imprisoned, he didn’t stop preaching. He preached to the guards! Every time God placed someone in his path, Paul preached the Gospel!

And we are called to do the same. We are called to share the hope of Jesus Christ wherever our feet take us. Maybe your feet take you into an office building every day. Do your co-workers know Jesus? Maybe your feet chase your babies and kids around all day. Are you sharing the hope of Jesus with your children?  Maybe your feet walk around classrooms on campus. Do you bring the Good News to your classmates?

Friends, some of us are called to preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth and we should support those missionaries financially and with prayer! Others of us are called to preach the hope of Jesus to those in our neighborhoods, schools, communities, and workplaces. Your feet may or may not travel as far as an overseas missionary but they should bring along a message that is just as beautiful everywhere you go—”Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13).

Pray

Lord, thank You for Your beautiful Gospel. Like Paul, I want to share that hope with everyone I encounter—near or far. Give me the courage to speak the message that saves. Amen.
