The Journey with Ron Moore

The Perfect Season | Philippians 3:12-16

Philippians 3:12-16 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

Although I never attended Oklahoma State, many of my friends. Since it was about 30 miles from my hometown we went to many college games. One season—I can’t recall the exact year—the coach’s name was Stanley—can’t recall his first name—but the theme of the year was “Press On!” I chuckled to myself when I saw it. The only thing the Cowpokes could do was press on. They were terrible every year. They invented new ways to lose games. We coined the phrase “The Poke-Choke” and it fit them well. It fits me well sometimes too.

Standing at the line of obedience and disobedience I have experienced a tightening around the neck and failed to advance the ball for Christ’s sake. I have fumbled during critical possessions. I have dropped perfect passes from the Lord. I have lost yardage. I have experienced some losing streaks and spiritual slumps. I have never come close to a “perfect season.” So I have one choice. I must press on.

My past failure could paralyze me. Who am I to think that I could possibly live a life worthy of Jesus? Don’t give me the ball. I’ll fumble it again. Throw to someone else…with hands. But one thing I must do: Letting go of past failures and reaching hard for all God wants me to be—I must press on toward the goal. I want the prize. I can’t get stuck! I must press on.

So, fellow fumblers, let’s press on together. Keep your head up! Forget about the last dropped pass! Keep those legs pumping! This game is going to be over soon. And then we’ll start the Perfect Season.
