Ziklag: Worn Out by Obedience | 1 Samuel 26:25 | Devotional

1 Samuel 26:25 Then Saul said to David, "May you be blessed, my son David; you will do great things and surely triumph." So David went on his way, and Saul returned home.

When the prophet Samuel anointed David as the next king of Israel, his path to the throne was a bit circuitous. After enjoying a short time of rock star status, the jealous King Saul tried to pin him to the wall with a spear. David ran for his life and continued running for the next ten years. Twice David had the chance to kill Saul, but each time refused. On both occasions, Saul feigned deep regret for the chase but the first and second incident ended the same way: “David went on his way, and Saul returned home.”

Obedience is hard, isn’t it? Even when you do what is right, you may not get to return “home.” The next stretch of the journey often continues with difficult challenges. Some teach that the moment a person trusts in Christ, he makes the next turn onto Easy Street. But that teaching does not come from Scripture and leads many into disappointment and disillusionment with God.

How about you? Did you expect a Christian mate to come knocking on your door the day after you broke off an unhealthy relationship? Did you expect a bigger sale to come today because your honesty and integrity lost a sale yesterday? Did you expect everything to be fine at home after you ignored a work associate’s advances? Did you expect a supernatural grade on your test because you didn’t cheat, even though you didn’t study? Blessings always follow obedience…but remember, God defines the blessings and God sets the timeline. Trust him.

Father, please help us to trust you…even when obedience doesn’t brings the results we wanted…even when the temptations are strong the day after obedience…even when, like David, we don’t get to go home. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
