The Journey with Ron Moore

There's An App For That: How Do I Find Direction? | Proverbs 1:7

Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

How Do I Find Direction? Fear the Lord.

Our oldest daughter has a thing about sharks. She has neither had an encounter with a shark, nor seen one in person, but she is terrified of them. She would not watch television during National Geographic’s Shark week, just in case one of her siblings accidentally (on purpose) turned to the program. When she was younger, she was convinced sharks were in the deep end of swimming pools. Perhaps you share my daughter’s emotion of Shark-o-phobia (if so, I can give you the name of a good shark therapist?).

Our passage today, however, is not addressing an emotion of terror or dread. “The fear of the Lord” refers a reverent awe and deep respect for God. God desires a relationship with us. He wants to address him as our Father. When we leave home, he welcomes prodigals back with open arms. And still, we must have a healthy admiration and respect of his person. He is the Maker of Heaven and Earth!

Appropriate awe and admiration for our Father is the beginning of wise living. We acknowledge him as the Ruler of our lives. We listen to what he says through his Word. We follow his instruction. There will be some twists and turns along our journey; some tough climbs and some dark valleys. But at the starting point of the path that leads us home is “the fear of the Lord.” Every other path is pure foolishness.

Father, we love you and we fear you. We acknowledge you as the Maker of Heaven and Earth, and as our Father. You named the stars, and you know our names. Thank you for your power and your tender care. We worship you as the Creator and we run to your embrace. In Jesus name. Amen.
