The Journey with Ron Moore

Take a Break | Leviticus 23:1-2

Leviticus 23:1-2  The LORD said to Moses, "Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'These are my appointed festivals, the appointed festivals of the LORD, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies.’”

In Leviticus 23, God instructed His people to reserve certain dates in their calendar for times of national public worship. The length of these festivals ranged from a one-day event to a feast that lasted several days. The purpose of each feast varied from rest, to remembering the poor, to remembering God’s deliverance, to showing joy and thankfulness for God’s blessings.

While these feasts are not re-instituted in the New Testament, they are very instructive for the believer. The feasts provided a time to break away from everyday activities and focus on the Lord. They provided a time of praise and worship. They were times to make things right with God. And the feast provided a great time for families to come together and enjoy food and fellowship.

The feasts show me a side of God I often miss. He desires me to take a break. He wants me to get away and reconnect with Him. And He must smile when He sees us enjoying food and fellowship with other believers. We don’t need to re-institute the feasts. But we do need to reserve dates in our calendars, other than Sunday morning, to get away, enjoy our Heavenly Father, and have fun with other believers.

Father, help us to schedule times of retreat, relaxation, and fellowship. Pry us away from our busy lives and allow us to reconnect with You and other believers. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
