The Journey with Ron Moore

Ziklag: Worn Out by Obedience | 1 Samuel 21:12-13

1 Samuel 21:12-13
David took these words to heart and was very much afraid of Achish king of Gath. So he pretended to be insane in their presence; and while he was in their hands he acted like a madman, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard.

Obedience is hard…and sometimes it can wear you out.

  • It’s hard for the teenager who desires to remain pure while his hormones are exploding.
  • It’s hard for the single desperately desiring a relationship but determined not to lower her standards…even as the years go by.
  • It’s hard for the couple committed to “better or worse” living in a long stretch of “worse.”
  • It’s hard for the businessperson working in a tough economy who refuses to cut corners, fudges numbers, or makes promises that can’t be kept.

Obedience is hard…and sometimes it can wear you out. That’s what happened to David. Exhausted from running from Saul, David decided to escape to the enemy. In today’s passage, the man after God’s own heart feigned insanity. Another time he moved into enemy territory, settled in Ziklag, and lived in disobedience for sixteen months.

Today we start a journey toward Ziklag. We will learn what tempts us to live there. We will learn the consequences of settling there. And we will learn how we can, by God’s grace, escape the land of disobedience. Buckle up! Let’s take the journey together.

Father, obedience is hard, but don’t let us give into disobedience. Keep us strong and away from Ziklag. But when we give into and venture into that city, please, by your grace, bring us to our senses. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
