The Journey with Ron Moore

Hello, My Name is ... God | Psalm 68:35

Psalm 68:35 You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!

Years ago when I taught Junior High, a student who knew I was a Christian gave me a bumper sticker with these three words—“God is Awesome.” It was at a time when the word “awesome” was thrown around a bit flippantly, and the words reminded me of a guy with a surfboard walking around saying “Totally awesome, dude.” That picture didn’t quite fit my view of the eternal God and while I appreciated the thought, I wasn’t impressed by the gift.

But in our passage today, the psalmist makes the statement—God is Awesome—without apology. When used of God, the word means “to shudder at, be in awe of, hold in deference.” He is the living God who works in and among his people, giving them the power and strength they need to meet every obstacle and challenge. His person and works are breathtaking, splendid, remarkable and awe-inspiring.

God is awesome! And he still gives power and strength to his people today. Are you in need of some power? There he stands—the awesome God—ready to supply your needs according to his riches in glory (Philippians 4:19). Are you in need of some strength? There he stands—the awesome God—ready to give “strength to the weary” and “power to the weak” (Isaiah 40:29). I wonder if I still have that bumper sticker….

Father, I praise you because you are awesome! There are some reading this today that need to experience your power and strength. Please show them that you are indeed an awesome God who works in and through the lives of your people. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
