The Journey with Ron Moore

Security | Job 31:24-25, 28

Job 31:24-25, 28 If I have put my trust in gold or said to pure gold, 'You are my security,' if I have rejoiced over my great wealth, the fortune my hands had gained . . . then these also would be sins to be judged, for I would have been unfaithful to God on high.

Jesse Livermore (1877-1940) was a Wall Street legend. Even after the market crashed in 1929, he was still worth more than $100 million. His trading techniques are still used in the stock market. Arthur Cutten (1870-1932) was one of the wealthiest Americans in the 1920s. He saw a grain shortage coming in 1924 and made several million dollars by buying up the grain futures. Ivar Krueger (1880-1932) was a Swedish hero for the money and business he brought to his country. He was called the “match king” for his European monopoly on the match industry.

But by 1934, Livermore was bankrupt. In his 1940 suicide note, he told his wife he was a failure. Cutten was eventually prosecuted on fraud and tax evasion. He died of a heart attack. Before Kruegar took his own life, deception was discovered in his business holdings. His companies owed more than the Swedish national debt.

One writer says, “Like many others who never make the headlines, these men could make a living, but they never learned how to live.” That’s what happens when wealth is our security. We start believing in the god of money, and begin the long slippery slide to the bottom of the slope.

Father, forgive us for thinking that security is found in anything other than You. Forgive us if we have been unfaithful to You in this area. Remind us, one more time, that we can’t serve You and money. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
