The Journey with Ron Moore

Road Rules | Proverbs 4:18-19 | Devotional

Proverbs 4:18-19 The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day. But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.

My first year after seminary, I taught at a public school during the week and preached at a church in Atlanta, Texas, on Sundays. The original plan was to make the three hour trip on Friday evenings, do pastoral work on Saturdays, preach on Sundays and return to Dallas. But Lori was pregnant with Brittany at the time. and the trips became more and more difficult and uncomfortable. So after several months of traveling together, I would head out by myself very early on Sunday mornings to arrive in time for the services.

On those early trips to Atlanta, I experienced many sunrises and each time was moved by the beauty. The dark would turn to dawn as the sun began to show itself. Then the darkness was gradually chased away until the sun gave out its “full light of day.” I think of that experience every time I read this passage.

When we belong to God and have been declared righteous by our trust in the finished work of Christ, He promises to direct our paths. Sometimes the paths may not be illuminated at first. The way may seem confusing. Fear fogs the trail. Disappointment makes it hard to start the journey. In fact, a darkened path is not uncommon for those committed to a life of faith. But as we trustingly take one step, then another, He begins to supply the light. Gradually, the way that was once confusing becomes clear; the path that was once dark is bright.

Father, some are reading this today who have a big decision to make, but the path is dark. They are confused and disheartened. Please speak to them clearly as they seek You and as they enter the path of Your choosing lighten the path and give the confidence that comes when the righteous follow hard after You. In Christ’s name, Amen.
