Community: How Does It Work? | Acts 2:42

Acts 2:42
They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

The essence of community is found in the Person of God. The expression of community is found in the church. But how does this expression work among people with different backgrounds, experiences, and preferences? Our passage today paints the earliest picture of the church. Let’s see what this new community was up to.

Teaching: The truth of God’s Word is an anchor for the believer. Without it, we are blown here and there by winds doctrine, disappointment, and tragedy.

Fellowship: God declared that it is not good from the man to be alone. The essence of community found in God cannot be expressed in one person. In order to stay sharp, we need each other (Proverbs 27:17).

Breaking of Bread: The new believers celebrated communion regularly as a reminder of the supremacy, sacrifice, and sufficiency of Jesus. We need that regular reminder as well.

Prayer: Praying with and for each other was an essential ingredient of life together.

Some things never go out of style. The essential components of doctrine, fellowship, communion, and prayer are the foundation components upon which everything else is built.

Father, thank you for your body—the Church. May we be a part of a growing healthy church and may our lives contribute to the growth and health. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
