The Greatest Text Message | 1 Timothy 4:16 | Devotional

1 Timothy 4:16
Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Paul is writing these words to a young pastor named Timothy, but the truth can be applied to the life of every believer. These words serve as a solemn reminder—Guard how you live and what you believe. Let’s flesh this out.

Watch your doctrine closely. Know what you believe and why you believe it. Don’t be blown back and forth with every wind of doctrine. Remember a new teaching is an old heresy. Get in the word and let the word get in you. As one old preacher said, if you get cut, bleed Bible. Billy Graham was asked what he would do different if he had his life to live over again. He said that instead of reading books about the Bible, he would have spent more time reading the Bible. That’s good advice.

Watch your life closely. People really don’t care how much you know. They can’t see into your crowded brain and be impressed by the vastness of your knowledge. Quite honestly, your ability to reproduce the layout of Solomon’s Temple, albeit impressive, will not make a huge impact on those in your life sphere. But they will watch how you live. They will observe the strength (or not) of your marriage. They will take note how you speak to your children and how your children speak to you. They will hide and see if your knowledge of integrity is actually applied to monthly reports, sales calls, and business trips. They will watch and see if your Ephesians 4:32 memory work applies to them when they screw up. Watch your life closely.

You and I can’t save anyone. That is God’s work. At the same time He uses people to lead people to Himself. The responsibility is real and solemn. Know what you believe and live it out. In doing so, you will prove your personal salvation and lead others to Christ. That’s eternally good stuff!
