Power Over the Grave | Hosea 13:14

Hosea 13:14 “I will deliver this people from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. Where, O death, are your plagues? Where, O grave, is your destruction?"

There is nothing glamorous about death…not one thing. Death comes to rip from our clutching hands that thing we hold onto for dear life. Whether the process is quick and unexpected, or wins the day after a long battle—death is the final enemy. It takes away futures and dreams, and leaves loved ones walking numbly from a freshly dug grave.

But things are different for the believer. For sure we grieve, but not like those who have no eternal hope. The God we serve holds power over the grave. He has bought us back from the strong claws of death to live forever with Him. With Jesus, death never wins. It never takes a victory lap. Death is a transition from the life we’ve lived to the life we’ve been longing to live.

Writing about the resurrection from the dead in 1 Corinthians 15, the Apostle Paul used today’s passage to remind his readers that death never stands on the winner’s platform to receive a medal. Jesus holds absolute power over the grave. For all who trust in Him, death is pushed aside as we transition to eternal life. If you would like to trust in Jesus, I invite you to pray the following prayer.

Lord Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner. I know that the penalty of my sin is physical, spiritual, and eternal death. I acknowledge that I can’t do anything about my situation. But I know that You came to pay the penalty for my sin. I trust in You alone as the One who died in my place. I trust in You alone as the only One who can place me in an eternal relationship with the living God. I desire to be Your child. I desire to live as Your child. Amen.
